“Thou shalt not kill.” (Exodus 20:13, KJV) This verse is quite possibly the most famous verse in the Bible about killing, and one of the most often used against Christians carrying a firearm. Another verse often quoted is from Matthew 26:52 – “Then said Jesus unto him, ‘Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword.’” (KJV) This verse is where we get the English saying, “Those who live by the sword, die by the sword”. After the Senate dropped all of the gun control bills that were scheduled this past week, most going down to a resounding defeat, the President, Vice President, and the mainstream media went on a tirade of hate and hissy fits. I’m going to touch on a subject here that is, on the surface, only peripherally connected to safety and to church ministry. Most of us have heard throughout our life that we should “think outside the box”. Most often, the well-intentioned person explains that most people live their lives inside a virtual “box”, created by the feelings and experiences, with walls carved out of their fears and beliefs. The motivational speaker will then explain that we must get over those walls and begin to think outside the box. Continue reading
As I write this, two days have passed since a horrific mass murder at a crowded midnight opening of “The Dark Knight Rises” movie. During one of the scenes of this dark comic book movie based on the “Batman” franchise, a killer went out and retrieved several weapons through a propped-open exit door. He then walked in and tossed at least one gas-type grenade (tear gas or smoke), and then calmly started shooting people in the audience. As of today, 12 people were killed and 58 were wounded enough to require a trip to the hospital. This psychopath injured or killed 70 people, and terrorized an unknown number more. Continue reading
